One Direction Wins A BRIT Award For Best Single

Congratulations to the members of One Direction who are now 2012 BRIT Award winners. Members Harry Styles, 18, Zayn Malik, 19, Liam Payne, 18, Louis Tomlinson, 20 and Niall Horan, 18, won for What Makes You Beautiful – the first single from their debut album Up All Night.

The band were formed when they each auditioned for The X Factor UK. Simon Cowell was One Direction’s mentor when he was a judge on the show. What Makes You Beautiful debuted at No. 1 on the U.K. singles chart when it was released in September 2011. The song still holds the record for most pre-orders for a Sony Music U.K. single.

Tomlinson said, “We cannot believe that we are stood here on this stage. I want to start off by saying this award is for the fans. We would be absolutely nowhere without them, so thank you very much.”

Payne added, “Obviously, we’d be nobody without our team backstage, so we want to thank all of them: Simon, Sonny, everybody at Syco, Kim Davidson, Emma, everybody at Modest [Management], Paul Higgins, all our team backstage. Thank you, guys. You’re amazing. To be on this stage is amazing, and we’re going to be doing an arena tour, so we’re massively flattered.”
