Ah, they grow up so fast. Seems like just yesterday Zac Efron was breaking hearts in High School Musical as the teenage Troy Bolton, and now he’s wearing an expensive suit and working the red carpet like a pro. And taking on more adult-themed films as he takes his career in a new direction.
The 24-year-old actor – who posed with co-star Maika Monroe – was in Italy at the 69th Venice Film Festival to promote his new film, At Any Price, a family drama set in the world of agriculture.
Before the film’s premiere Zac talked about growing as an actor – the first step being choosing more complex roles like the one director Ramin Bahrani offered him in At Any Price. “All I have, really, is the ability to look back at my elders and the people that I really respect in this industry, the actors that have been here before and really made an impact … and I put myself in their shoes,” he said.
“I sort of stand here with, say, two roads in front of me,” he continued. “One (is) the easy path … towards money and the other one being towards playing more interesting roles that I don’t have all the answers to, or going with Ramin into the cornfields for a couple of weeks.
“It seems like the choice that I respect more. I’m following my gut here and this is what I want to be doing, you know. I’m hungry for it.”
